China Unicom taps HID Global for Omnikey 1021 desktop smart card readers

Wednesday 2 February 2011 10:30 CET | News

US electronic identity services provider HID Global has entered an agreement with mobile operator China Unicom to provide the latter with the Omnikey 1021 desktop smart card readers at its stores in 20 provinces and cities across the country.

As part of the deal, China Unicom has integrated the Omnikey 1021 readers in its business operating system to read and write SIM cards. Additionally, the readers have eliminated mobile number configuration and reduced SIM card inventory levels. During card issuance, users can personalize the STK menu of their SIM cards and install applications. The smart card reader enables the customer service staff to personalise a blank SIM card with a mobile number and other optional services.

To date, HID Global has provided China Unicom with 80,000 Omnikey 1021 desktop smart card reader units. It is estimated that the total SIM card orders across the country will decrease by 8 to 10 million per quarter.
