The current H1N1 influenza pandemic has triggered an increase in credit card spending for medical expenses in Thailand, online news outlet bangkokpost.com reports.

According to same source, Thai consumer finance provider Krungthai Card (KTC) has seen 64,000 credit cardholders use their cards for medical treatments in May 2009, a 19 percent increase compared to the 54,000 consumers who carried out similar purchases during the previous month. Additionally, the same company has registered around 90,000 healthcare-related transactions in May 2009, up 24 percent compared to 73,000 similar transactions the previous month.

Most of the additional spending carried out by Thai credit cardholders had to do with on-demand influenza diagnoses, but medical treatment spending levels also registered an increase.

KTC currently has issued around 1.6 million credit cards to date, with healthcare ranking third in terms of card use, surpassed by fuel and general shopping.
