GlobalPlatform releases new card network framework

Wednesday 2 December 2009 00:09 CET | News

GlobalPlatform, a leader in smart card infrastructure development, introduces the GlobalPlatform Card Networked Framework v1.0, in a bid to facilitate advanced internet connectivity.

The technical document introduces new concepts that will enable GlobalPlatform cards to support a sophisticated networked environment. The framework will facilitate the administration of a new series of GlobalPlatform cards, which can utilize TCP/IP communications and support web applications similar to those on IT servers. By connecting to the web, the smart card can request updates to a management server, but also use it to link online and personal content, before presenting this data to the cardholder. Thus, the cardholder will be able to track recent financial transactions via his mobile phone without them the need to actively log online.

According to a press release, this technology aligns with Java Card 3 Connected Edition Runtime Environment, and is part of the second phase of GlobalPlatform’s migration to support IP connectivity, following the release of GlobalPlatform Card Specification Amendment B* in 2008.

The GlobalPlatform Card Networked Framework v1.0 will be relevant for mobile network operators whose networks are IP-based and for government smart card programs as it offers communication between cards and the back-office systems.
