Friday 12 June 2009 11:23 CET | News

French smart card manufacturer Oberthur Technologies partners Dyetron, a Colombian developer of technology based on smart cards, to make EMV (Europay MasterCard VISA) cards available on the Colombian market.

Under the terms of the agreement, Dyetron is to make use of Oberthurs personalisation system and is to become part of the global Oberthur network which includes over 30 services centres, in a bid to enable Colombian banks to migrate to EMV. EMV is a standard for interoperation of chip cards, POS terminals and ATMs, for authenticating credit and debit card payments.

According to the local banking regulator Superintendencia Financiera, issuers and merchants must migrate to EMV payments by 1 January 2010.
