Turkey: contactless cards usage on the way up - report

In Turkey, the number of contactless cards has reached 10.3 million in 2012, up by 61 percent as compared to the previous year, a recent study unveils.

According to data from financial institution Interbank Card Center of Turkey (BKM), 1.4 million of the contactless cards are prepaid debit cards and the remaining 8.9 million are credit cards.

The same source indicates that when it comes to the number of shopping transactions made with contactless cards, 2012 has registered a boom in such transactions, made either with prepaid debit or credit cards. Result show that the number of contactless shopping transactions made with debit cards has increased by 14 percent in 2012, reaching 18.2 million from 7.5 million transactions in 2011. Similarly, the number of transactions with credit cards has also jumped by 122 percent to 8.4 million transactions.

Findings also reveal that the volume of transactions with contactless prepaid debit cards has grown by 171 percent, reaching EUR 13 million, while the volume of transactions with contactless credit cards has increased by 243 percent to EUR 50 million.

With regard to the number of POS which enable contactless payments, research mentions it has reached to 61.000 in 2012, up from 18.000 in 2009. The number of contactless transactions per POS, which was 88 in 2009, has increased by almost five times and reached to 435 in 2012.
