Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority issues RFP for new fare payment system

Tuesday 4 January 2011 11:35 CET | News

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a new electronic fare payment system, media outlet progressiverailroading.com reports.

In addition, the same source indicates that the vendor sought via the newly-issued RFP would have to develop a fare system to process payments at the gate using several technologies. Some of these include contactless, chip-enabled credit cards, federal identification cards or NFC-based smartphones, as well as existing SmarTrip cards.

Nevertheless, until a new system is developed, the current SmarTrip system is expected to be operational, according to the source. In addition, the new service is set to provide US customers with enhanced online services, texting and mobile apps, the same source has highlighted.
