Daon leads first NSTIC pilot program

Monday 11 March 2013 11:20 CET | News

Daon, a developer of identity authentication technology, and the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), have teamed up to make AAAE the initial pilot participant for the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) initiative.

Under a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Daon team will implement multiple NSTIC pilot projects enabling subscribers to conduct online transactions.

Participating AAAE members are using credentials based on patented IdentityX risk-based, multi-factor, mobile authentication technology to access restricted, member-only areas of the association’s website. They will use their smartphones or tablets to verify their identity each time they access the website sections that house sensitive data. The identity management services are hosted in the cloud by TrustX, a Daon affiliate.

In addition to piloting the use of strong authentication credentials, Daons pilot also focuses on the movement of relying party partners to external identity providers and trust frameworks as well as cross-sector credential interoperability. Following AAAE, other partners scheduled to go live include AARP, PayPal, Purdue University and a financial institution.

As part of the NSTIC pilot, Daon will upgrade the TrustX identity provider service to align with existing trust frameworks, such as the Kantara initiative and OpenID, as well as the identity ecosystem as it evolves. Daon is an active participant in the private sector-led Identity Ecosystem Steering Group (IDESG) chartered to administer the development and adoption of the Identity Ecosystem Framework.

The NSTIC initiative addresses current challenges in authenticating identities online. NSTIC is a White House initiative to work collaboratively with the private sector, advocacy groups, public sector agencies and other organizations to upgrade the privacy, security and convenience of sensitive online transactions.
