Dexter payment card malware hits South Africa

Thursday 17 October 2013 09:25 CET | News

South Africa has been affected by one of the biggest cyber-fraud attacks in its history, according to the Payment Association of South Africa (Pasa).

The same source mentions that the payment card systems of thousands of shops, restaurants and hotels have been compromised.

Pasa has also unveiled that the attackers have used a new type of malware dubbed Dexter. The Dexter code was linked to a series of attacks on point-of-sale systems in the UK, US and dozens of other countries towards the end of 2012. It skims and transmits the cards magnetic-stripe information, allowing clones to be made that can then be used for fraudulent purchases.

Pasa has declared that is suspects the criminals responsible were based in Europe, but added it was not sure from which countries.
