Digicel introduces biometric identification system for international money transfers

Thursday 21 June 2012 09:28 CET | News

Digicel Pacific, a division of mobile operator Digicel Group, has introduced biometric enabled payment systems into stores in New Zealand to offer its Digicel Mobile Money customers a new way to send money home to the Pacific.

The newly deployed system enables customers sending money home to register just once and record their fingerprint as permanent identification within the Digicel system. From that point on, existing customers will only have to scan their fingerprint at the VeriFone terminal to retrieve their details and make a new transaction, even if they are registered at another store. The new fingerprint technology avoids the need for customers to provide identification each time they transact.

Digicel Mobile Money (DMM) is a service in use in five countries in the Pacific. It turns a subscribers mobile phone into a wallet, enabling them to store money, send money to each other, pay bills and top up with airtime.

In recent news, Digicel has entered an agreement with US-based electronic payment services provider VeriFone Systems to deploy the latter’s mWallet services and NFC-enabled payment systems in the business district in Tongas capital Nukualofa.
