Tencent to work with Chinese govt for biometric banking

Chinese internet portal Tencent has revealed plans to be working with the government on facial recognition technology needed for biometric banking.

Remote account opening will rely on facial recognition on both desktop computers and smartphones.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Megvii application Alipay would use accesses facial scans held in a Ministry of Public Security database drawn from legal identification files on about 1.3 billion citizens.

Meanwhile, Chinas central bank is currently soliciting opinions on a draft rule that would allow people to open bank accounts remotely.
