Younger people more susceptible to friendly fraud

Younger people, especially college-age individuals are at a higher risk of falling victim to identity theft, recent statistics indicate.

According to data from the Better Business Bureau, college students are especially susceptible to what is known as friendly fraud, meaning someone close to you steals your identity. Results show that one in five cases of friendly fraud occurs on college campuses.

According to the Federal Trade Commission website, identity theft is when someone else uses your personal information without permission to commit fraud or other crimes.

Nicole Williams, marketing director at Heartland Bank and Trust, the best way to prevent identity theft is to make sure confidential information remains confidential.
