The joint venture will allow customers to buy and sell goods on eBay via Plasa.com. According to Telkom president director Rinaldi Firmansyah, cited by media outlet thejakartaglobe.com, Telkom, via its subsidiary Multimedia Nusantara (Metra), will own 60 percent of MetraPlasa.
The cooperation is aimed at helping small and medium sized enterprises which subscribe to Telkom’s services to market their products and enable access to a domestic market as well as international customers.
In 2011, Telkom’s revenue from data and information technology services has grown 20.8 percent reaching USD 2.6 billion. The growth was attributed to its fixed broadband internet service, Speedy, its mobile broadband Flash and BlackBerry services.
According to research services provider MarkPlus Insight, at the end of 2011, internet users in Indonesia have reached to 55 million users, up by over 32 percent since 2010. Business research group Frost & Sullivan has also unveiled that in 2011 e-commerce transactions in Indonesia have amounted to USD 1 billion. The Worldwide Online Shopping survey released by MasterCard has indicated that that 77 percent of Indonesian respondents have mentioned they were willing to shop online.
