South Asia: Online shopping market increases

The number of consumers who make online shoppings has increased in South Asia, especially in China, India, Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand, a recent study has revealed.

According to the Visa e-commerce Consumer Monitor 2010, 87 percent of the respondents from the above mentioned areas have bought products and services online.
According to the results, online shoppings have witnessed the highest increase in China, Taiwan and India, where 98 percent, 97 percent and respectively 89 percent of the respondents have made online purchases over the last 12 months.

The survey has also indicated that the most popular categories for online purchases are airline tickets, accommodation and travel agent services (with almost USD 550), share trading (with USD 320), electrical appliances and white goods (USD 166), banking and financial services (USD 92) and computer hardware (USD 75).

The main reasons for which consumers have decided to shop online include convenience, bargain hunting, freedom to shop at any time (83 percent), the possibility to find and compare products easily (81 percent), compare prices to save money (81 percent) and to avoid going to the store (74 percent). Additionally, according to the source, 76 percent of the respondents have declared they are satisfied with the ease of the online payment process and 72 percent have mentioned they are satisfied with the speed of their online transaction.
