Turkey: 20% of internet users purchase products and services online in 2011

In Turkey, nearly 20 percent of all internet users have purchased products and services for personal use online in 2011, a recent research has revealed.

According to the “Turkey B2C E-Commerce Report 2011” carried out by Germany-based market research firm yStats, B2C e-commerce revenue has accounted for more than 5 percent of the total retail revenue in 2010. The most popular product categories for online purchases among Turkish consumers are fashion, sporting goods, consumer electronics, home appliances and books, magazines, newspapers.

The study has pointed out that, in Turkey, internet is mostly used to read news online or to download newspaper and magazine articles. Almost half of the Turkish population used the internet to search for product and service related information.

The findings of the research have also indicated that, in 2010, almost 40 percent of the Turkish population used the internet. Nevertheless, Turkey still lags far behind Germany and the US in terms of broadband access per 100 inhabitants. When it comes to internet access via mobile phones, 1 percent of all Turks have used mobile phones to access the internet.
