UK: Online spending reaches GBP 300 billion since 2000

Online spending in the UK has reached GBP 300 billion in the last 11 years, according to the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) Capgemini e-retail Sales Index.

According to the report, the Sales Index has registered a 6,600 percent growth since its launch in April 2000 when consumers spent GBP 800 million on online purchases.
Annual e-retail spend has increased from GBP 0.8 billion in 2000 to GBP 58.8 billion in 2010. The total market is expected to reach GBP 69 billion in 2011, the report indicates.

The report points out that, of all online spending categories, clothing is the most important contributor to the sales surge, jumping by 3,245 percent, since its launching in 2001. The electricals sector has also increased, up 996 percent since February 2002.
