Shopping made on mobile devices across UK in 2012 is expected to grow by 584 percent reaching GBP 4.5 billion, recent results have shown.

According to a study authorised by research firm Kelkoo and conducted by the UK’s Centre for Retail Research, the increase makes UK consumers the largest mobile shoppers in Europe, followed by consumers in Germany (GBP 2.7 billion) and France (GBP 1.9 billion).

The findings of the survey have indicated that in 2011, 46 percent of UK mobile users owned smartphones, which determined a total spending of GBP 3 billion via mobile devices (GBP 192 via each device on average), the figure representing 8 percent of total online spending.

Research has also unveiled that UK is expected to reach the highest European proportion of all online spending using a mobile device at 7.9 percent. On the contrary, consumers from Poland (4.1 percent), France (4.6 percent) Denmark (5 percent) and Italy (5.3 percent) are expected to spend the lowest proportion of their online budget via their mobile devices.

According to the source, in the UK 46 percent of mobile device users own a smartphone, accounting for 24.6 million mobile devices across the country.
