Tuesday 3 September 2013 11:50 CET | News

Blue Label Telecoms, a distributor of prepaid electronic tokens of value and transactional services, has closed a partnership with MasterCard.

Under the agreement, small traders and rural shops in South Africa are set to be equipped with point-of-sale (POS) devices which will enable them to accept chip and PIN and contactless payment cards for goods and services and to sell Blue Labels prepaid vouchers using a single device.

Blue Label also plans to upgrade some of its existing terminals used in smaller stores using MasterCard Mobile software. The MasterCard Mobile payment platform will enable MasterCard cardholders to use their PIN-based debit, cheque or credit card issued by Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and their mobile phone to pay for their purchases in-store at select BLU Approved merchants.

In recent news, MasterCard, Dai Nippon Printing (DNP), a Japanese printing company, and international secure mobile transactions technology company C-SAM, have unveiled the coming launch of a white-label near field communication (NFC) mobile wallet service in Japan.
