South Korea is planning to install or upgrade around 300,000 mobile payment checkouts at several retailers and transport services by the end of 2011, media outlet reuters.com reports.

According to the source, South Koreas communications commission has announced plans to require mobile phone vendors to equip all smartphones with NFC technology. The authorities expect the new initiative to increase the number of NFC-enabled phones to more than 5 million units by the end of 2011, the source reports.

South Korea currently has on its market two NFC-enabled handsets, namely Samsungs Galaxy S II and Pantechs Vega Racer.
