Thursday 29 August 2013 14:49 CET | News

Mobile network operator Telefonica Czech Republic is set to launch a mobile POS pilot in partnership with MasterCard Worldwide, targeting small merchants in the Czech Republic with a device that supports MasterCard PayPass, along with contact EMV and mag-stripe transactions.

The project dubbed mPO2S uses a mobile POS device, iSMP, from French-based provider of payment services Ingenico. Financial institution CSOB is set to acquire the transactions for the targeted merchants while Czech company Monet+ developed the mobile POS app for Android, iOS and Windows-based smartphones and tablets.

To conduct a transaction, the merchant enters the amount on his mobile phone or tablet using the Telefonica POS app. The customers then inserts, swipes or taps his card on the mobile POS terminal. For amounts above USD 26.09, if the customers are using EMV, they would enter their PIN on the mPOS device. If they use the contactless interface on the device, customers could tap with either contactless cards, passive stickers or an applet on NFC phones. The device supports both MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave,

The pilot is set to be launched in September 2013 and a commercial launch is planned to take place during Q1 2014.
