Oberthur Technologies, a France-based provider of security and identification solutions and services, has been selected by Thailand-based telecom operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) to provide their contactless technology MIFARE DESFire embedded in an NFC SIM card, for public transportation and shopping in Bangkok.

The NFC SIM card with embedded MIFARE DESFire technology, dubbed DragonFly, is being launched in Asia with AIS and will enable a mobile phone to be used as an e-purse to pay for public transportation and goods in Bangkok. Service users can also directly top-up credit on their SIM card and check both their balance and transaction history using their mobile phones.

Oberthur Technologies was founded in 1984 as a technology provider. The company delivers systems development, smart cards services including payment cards, SIM cards, access cards, NFC and secure identity documents. The company also offers solutions such as the Smart PIN, where the customer receives his banking card PIN via SMS.

In recent news, mobile payments platform provider MoreMagic Solutions, a subsidiary of Oberthur Technologies and Splash Mobile Money, a provider of mobile money transfer and payments services in Sierra Leone, have extended the Splash Mobile Money ecosystem in Sierra Leone to include DStv, a satellite television provider, financial institutions Access Bank and Ecobank Microfinance and the national network of rural banks.
