Ukraine: PrivatBank selects Gemalto for contactless mobile payments

Thursday 27 September 2012 10:34 CET | News

Dutch digital security company Gemalto has been selected by Ukrainian financial institution PrivatBank to provide the Optelio contactless stickers for the latter’s first commercial mobile payments deployment.

The Optelio sticker is a microprocessor-based secure personal device that is set to enable contactless functionality for handsets that do not have contactless features built-in. The Optelio contactless sticker has achieved MasterCard certification and complements the Gemalto services already available for mobile payments.

How it works

By attaching the Optelio contactless sticker to their mobile phones, PrivatBank customers are expected to be able to use the contactless feature on payments under EUR 20, while larger amount transactions will require a PIN code. Payments via the service can be made in fast food restaurants, cinemas, supermarkets and other retail outlets across the Ukraine.

In recent news, Gemalto has extended its mobile payment software solution to include the Western Union Money Transfer service.
