Debit and credit card purchases at Argos charged twice due to "system error" Wednesday 5 November 2008 | 05:00 PM CET

UK customers who purchased items via their debit and Visa credit cards from general goods retailer Argos have fallen victim to a system error which saw them charged twice for their goods. The error occurred on 24 October and affected some 190.000 customers.

Argos representatives, who confirmed that the error had indeed taken place, didn’t specify the exact amount which was charged in excess but admitted it amounts to “several millions of pounds”. The retail store, which primarily displays goods to its customers via catalogue, insisted its customers had been made aware of the situation and that steps are being taken to refund the duplicate charges.
