In 2011, spending on Visa cards on Europe has increased by 14 percent reaching EUR 1.16 trillion, according to financial results released by Visa. This means that EUR 1 in every EUR 7 of consumer spending in Europe is made via a Visa card, as compared to EUR 1 in EUR 8 in 2010.

On 30 September 2011, Europe Visa saw UK debit spend on its cards reaching EUR 382 billion, up by 27 percent since 2010. In addition, e-commerce has accounted for 22 percent of all Visa spend in the UK, increasing by 40 percent in 2011.

As a result of EMV technologies, fraud associated with Visa cards in UK has decreased by 23 percent to 0.05 percent.

Visa Europe forecasts that in 2012 the number of contactless cards will hit 30 million in the UK. Additionally, the company is expected to release mobile devices able to perform contactless point-of-sale transactions.

The company has already made strategic investments in Monitise and Beyond Analysis and in September 2011 rolled out mobile person-to-person payment and alert services for bank customers.
