US-based payment processor Heartland Payment Systems has signed a settlement agreement with US direct banking and payment services company Discover to solve claims from Discover related to the 2008 data breach intrusion into Heartland's payment system environment.
Under the terms of the agreement, Heartland will be paying Discover USD 5 million in order to resolve all intrusion-related issues between the two parties. The settlement marks Heartlands’ final agreement with a card brand related to the intrusion.The payments processing company, which had its network hacked by a group of cyber criminalsat the end of 2008, had details pertaining to130 million debit and credit cards stolen.
The payments processor has also signed intrusion settlement deals with American Express for USD 3.6 million in December 2009, Visa for USD 60 million in January 2010 and MasterCard for USD 41.4 million in May 2010.
