US: MasterCard releases electronic payments roadmap Tuesday 31 January 2012 | 02:40 PM CET

MasterCard has rolled out a roadmap which focuses on upgrading the US electronic payments system.

The recently launched roadmap, which presents the path to migrate from magnetic stripe to EMV technology currently available on “chip” cards, is meant to enhance the way consumers will pay for products and services.

The roadmap is set to address the way consumers actually shop and enable them to manage, control and secure their payments as well as the possibility to integrate loyalty programs and offers into the purchasing experience. The main elements of the roadmap include:
• EMV technology
• Focus on acquirer infrastructure
• Focus on greater security and cardholder verification
• Addressing all channels including ATMs, point-of-sale, online and mobile commerce

Via this roadmap, MasterCard sustains the importance of EMV standards in the US. Information about the roadmap has been made available on the company`s website. Further details regarding the roadmap and implementation activities are expected to be released during the upcoming months.
