UAE: Central Bank, Emirates ID to introduce an e-wallet system in 2015

Wednesday 30 January 2013 09:43 CET | News

Financial institution Central Bank of the UAE and Emirates Identity Authority (Emirates ID) have teamed up to introduce an e-wallet system in the UAE in 2015.

As a result, UAE residents may be able to make payments using their national ID cards. The system will use the national ID card to identify users and replace cash for financial transactions. The e-wallet will enable payment for purchases, either through the points of sale or online using the Emirates ID card.

The Central Bank estimates that about Dh1.7 billion in cash will be issued in the UAE in 2015 and 3 percent of the amount will be transacted through the e-wallet system.
