In China, the annual economic loss due to internet crime has reached USD 46.44 billion in 2012, with an average of 700,000 users becoming victims of cybercrime every day, recent statistics reveal.

According to a report released by the Peoples Public Security University of China, public security departments across the country have investigated more than 118,000 internet crime cases in 2012, many of which have involved multiple victims. The same source points out that the majority of internet crimes go unreported as they may involve only small amounts of money and seen as not worth the hassle to involve authorities.

During H1 2012, one in three online shoppers have been defrauded or have encountered illegal phishing, causing USD 4.94 billion in losses. Results show that top threats include fraud, pyramid selling and personal information theft. According to data, compared with conventional fraud cases, online crimes are more difficult to solve.

The report also indicates that a comprehensive law on internet crimes is still needed considering the current situation.
