Globally, consumer interest in online shopping is on the rise, with an increasing percentage of consumers intending to make purchases via the internet for categories such as clothing, food and entertainment, a recent study unveils.

According to a new report from global information company Nielsen, consumers are becoming more confident when it comes to e-commerce. Results show that more than a quarter of consumers have revealed their plans to purchase food and drink using a laptop, computer or a mobile device in the next three to six months, up 44 percent from 18 percent in 2010.

Data also reveals that consumers’ intentions to purchase items such as gig or sports tickets has also jumped 10 percentage points to 30 percent over the same period. More familiar categories for shoppers, such as clothing purchases, have remained static or even saw a decline, with intent to buy clothes up just one percentage point to 37 percent, and travel reservations down two percentage points to 30 percent.

Statistics also point out that overall, 49 percent of respondents across 56 countries have declared they have bought a product online, with 46 percent of the total claiming that they have used social media to help inform their purchase decisions, illustrating the increasing importance of networks such as Facebook and Twitter in driving e-commerce.
