Dutch digital security services provider Gemalto has entered an agreement with the Lithuanian Ministry of Interior to provide the latter with its Sealys Laser-Secured e-ID cards.

Under the terms of the deal, Gemalto is set to deliver 900,000 e-ID cards for the Lithuanian authorities, which are to serve as national ID cars and electronic EU travel documents for Lithuanians. The national ID cards are mandatory for Lithuanian citizens aged 16 and over. Gemalto has teamed up with Lithuanian security printing company Lodvila to deliver the cards.

National rollout of the cards was initiated at the beginning of January 2009. The e-ID cards feature fingerprint-based contactless technology for the holder’s identity verification at border crossings, as well as an embedded contact microprocessor with a certificate for online identification, which allows cardholders to sign official documents such as contracts and declarations electronically.

Gemalto has managed e-ID programs for states such as Bahrain, Belgium, Finland, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sweden and the UAE.
