US financial institution US Bank announced the launch of a mobile-enabled iPhone app for partner Recreational Equipment (REI), an US retailer of outdoor gear and apparel.

The US Bank iPhone app allows users to apply for and receive on-the-spot credit which they can use for immediate in-store purchases.

Currently, the app has been made available for pilot to REI, under the name REI Visa App, which is a virtual credit card with account information via the user’s mobile phone. Customers can also view their account balance and most recent transactions as well as making a payment to the account.

The US Bank credit card app is set to be introduced to other US Bank retail partners by the end of 2011. While the app is currently available for iPhone users only, US Bank has announced that it plans to make its service available for Android customers in the near future.

In September 2011, US Bank has rolled out its Mobile SinglePoint offering, a new tool looking to provide business customers with banking services via their mobile device.
