Visa Europe is set to annually invest EUR 100 million into mobile payments and e-commerce to enable commercial mobile-payment rollouts starting at the end of 2011, according to the online media outlet paymentssource.com.

Visa Europe is an association of nearly 4,000 member European banks which have collectively issued more than 419 million Visa debit, credit and commercial cards across the European Union as of the end of September. According to Visa Europe, its cardholders will spend a combined EUR 2 trillion with their cards by 2015.

Since its founding in 2004, Visa Europe has invested about EUR 1 billion in payments technology, namely in transaction-processing infrastructure, contactless technology, mobile and e-commerce payments.
