Nearly 86 percent of the British population will make purchases on the internet this Christmas, a 6 percent growth as compared to 2008, a survey indicates.
The lack of trust in the security of the online channel as well as concerns regarding online identity theft are the main reasons why European customers are about to spend less than a third of their total holiday shopping budget online this Christmas. Thus, UK consumers will spend 32 pence in every pound, the French will spend 30 cents in every Euro, the Germans will spend 28 cents in every Euro, while the Swedes will spend 21 öre in every krona online.
The same survey indicates that 22 percent of British consumers will avoid online shopping this Christmas, because of reservations over online ID theft and fraud, while 14 percent would do so because of their lack of trust in e-commerce sites. One third of consumers claim they are put off from buying online because they do not have the possibility to test the product before buying it, while 27 percent fear that the products they order will not arrive in time for Christmas.
The online survey was commissioned by VeriSign and conducted by YouGov.
