Taiwan and the US are reportedly in talks to start negotiations on cooperation in the area of e-commerce, taiwannews.com has revealed, citing the Minister without Portfolio Yiin Chii-ming.
The negotiating discussions between the two countries follow the resumption of bilateral talks under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). Taiwan and the US signed the TIFA in September 1994, but the US has suspended bilateral talks under this framework several times since 1998.
In June 2010, Taiwan has signed an economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China. The two partners have decided to start negotiations on agreements on trade in products and services, investment and dispute resolution, within six months after the ECFA takes effect, minister Yiin Chii-ming has commented.
Recently, Taiwan has also closed a deal with Singapore in a bid to explore the possibility of signing an economic cooperation agreement.
