US e-commerce spending rate climbs up 9% in Q2 2010 Wednesday 11 August 2010 | 10:03 AM CET

US online retail spending has witnessed a 9 percent increase during Q2 2010, reaching USD 32.9 billion compared to USD 30,1 million during the same period in 2009.

According to research conducted by comScore, a provider of measurement and evaluation services for the digital world, the increase marks the third consecutive quarter of positive year-over-year growth following a year of flat or negative growth rates.

Products from categories such as consumer electronics, computer software, books and magazines have ranked first among consumer preferences when making online purchases, the same study has shown. Moreover, multi-channel retailers managed to regain e-commerce spending market share in front of pure play retailer (e-tailer which uses the internet as their primary means of retailing) after five consecutive quarters of declining market share.

However, comScore has indicated that its predictions for the second half of 2010 remain “cautiously” optimistic, with factors such as unemployment rates and uncertainty in the stock market possibly preventing e-commerce spending growth in the near term.
