Turkey-based financial institution Isbank has installed almost 3400 Hitachi biometric finger vein scanners in ATMs and branches across the country, allowing customers to withdraw cash without using cards.
In order to be able to install the biometric scanners in 2,400 NCR and Wincor Nixdorf ATM, Isbank has collaborated with technology vendor MIG International. The rest of 1000 scanners have been deployed into the bank’s branches. Currently, Isbank is conducting trials with several merchants to test the new authentication system. The bank has also revealed plans to expand its 'Biyokimlik' (Bio-identity) system to shops.
The new Hitachi finger vein authentication technology uses light to read the unique pattern of veins inside the finger. The system is widely spread in Japan, where over 75 000 finger vein-based ATMs have been installed since 2006.
