Mobile Payments
Users show significant interest in using mobiles to buy big ticket items – survey Wednesday 1 September 2010 | 11:21 AM CET

Mobile payments are expected to witness significant changes, with users showing increasing interest in purchasing goods and services via their mobile handsets, a recent survey has revealed.

The research conducted by mobile commerce and communications services provider Netsize, a subsidiary of Gemalto, points out that users are willing to pay with their mobile devices for items whose value goes beyond that of transaport tickets and parking tokens. As far as the range of prices is concerned, almost 94 percent of professionals claimed that they would be “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to purchase goods totaling up to EUR 25 using their mobile phones. Moreover, 83 percent of participants manifested openness towards the idea of paying for items such as concert tickets (valued at amounts up to EUR 50) via their mobile devices.

In addition, the research has found out that over 50 percent of respondents would be likely to purchase physical goods for amounts up to EUR 100 with their mobile phones, a figure that confirms the huge growth potential for mobile commerce and increased interest in new ways to shop and buy.

Nevertheless, methods of payment retain first degree importance among mobile shopping consumers, since 60 percent of respondents reported that payment choice is important to them. The finding stresses the key role that companies and merchants should play in order to provide a choice of payment methods to the consumers. All companies across the emerging mobile commerce ecosystem must work together to remove the regulatory barriers that make mobile commerce a challenge, the same survey points out.
