Alipay overtakes PayPal, reaches 200 million users Tuesday 7 July 2009 | 11:28 AM CET

Chinese Alibaba Group's online payment division Alipay has reached the 200 million user milestone, JLM Pacific Epoch reports.

In May 2009, the company recorded 185 million registered users, as compared to 150 million users registered at the end of February 2009, including 460,000 corporate ones. Alipay delivers an e-commerce payment technology and risk management system for banks and financial institutions. The company provides its customers with multi-channel payment options, such as online banking transfers, cash and direct debit services. According to the same source, Alipay expects to register higher total transaction volumes than PayPal within the next three years. PayPal has 180 million users in 190 countries and territories around the world.
