PayPal to open up software platform to outside developers on 3 November

Wednesday 21 October 2009 | 10:37 AM CET

PayPal has revealed plans to open up its global software platform to third-party developers on 3 November 2009.

eBay`s online payments division is currently collaborating with electronics makers, software firms, and software developers, PayPal president Scott Thompson stated during a Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.

PayPal’s API gives developers access to PayPal’s features, allowing them more freedom in building applications, which includes the ability to accept and distribute payments. The beta version of the API was released in July 2009. Such an initiative is meant to encourage the development of new methods to make PayPal online transactions in televisions, touch-screen advertising, computers, mobile devices, and even "smart" appliances.
