In New Zealand, the proportion of smartphone owners who use their mobile device to conduct online banking transaction has almost doubled in 2012, recent statistics unveil.

According to Roy Morgan Research, an Australian market research company, while 58 percent of smartphone users still use computers to bank online, in 2013 to date, 16 percent have conducted online banking activities on their mobile phones, up from 8.3 percent in January 2013.

The same source indicates that the adoption of online banking via mobile devices differs between brands: one in three Apple iPhone users compared to one in ten Samsung users. Yet, the proportion will continue to increase in line with the availability of mobile banking applications on Samsung’s Android operating systems.

The survey points out that in order to understand the shift to mobile, businesses need to be aware of the capabilities and rates of consumer uptake of different devices and the levels of demand for mobile applications across target markets and industries.
