South Korea: Online banking usage up 6.3% in Q1 2011

Online banking usage in South Korea has gone up 6.3 percent in Q1 2011, as compared to Q4 2010, media outlet koreaherald.com reports, citing financial results released by the Bank of Korea (BOK).

Results have shown that online banking transactions in South Korea reached an average of 38.7 million daily in Q1 2011, compared to a reported 36.4 million in Q4 2010. The source reports that the data is based on users checking financial records, transferring funds or taking out loans via the internet.

Moreover, results have pointed out that the total value of online banking transactions in Q1 2011 in South Korea reached USD 29.4 billion per day, a 1.1 percent increase over Q4 2010.

Furthermore, the results have shown that the number of online banking subscribers registered with 19 local financial institutions has gone up 3.8 percent to 69.1 million in Q1 2011 in South Korea.

As far as mobile banking transactions in South Korea are concerned, results have revealed that they accounted for 17.4 percent of total online banking usage in Q1 2011, compared to a reported 12.8 percent in Q4 2010. In addition, the number of smartphone-based transactions in the country reached 3.9 million in Q1 2011, up 79.5 percent over Q4 2010.
