Turkey: online card shopping is expected to exceed EUR 150 bln in 2023

In Turkey, online card shopping is expected to exceed EUR 150 billion in 2023, with the number of transactions reaching 600 million, according to financial institution Interbank Card Center of Turkey (BKM), which has made this forecast by taking into account the online card payments industry in 2012.

Results show that that the number of card payments transactions will reach 157 million and total amount of payment made with cards will be EUR 15 billion in 2012 for the e-commerce industry.

BKMs data also indicates that EUR 2 of each EUR 45 of shopping made with cards have been made through e-commerce in 2008 and this amount has increased to EUR 4 in 2012. It is also estimated that it will reach EUR 8 in 2023.

The same source mentions that 90 percent of airline expenditures is performed online and 44 percent of payments made to travel agencies has been made through online card shopping for the period between the beginning of 2012 and end of October. These industries are followed by insurance with 36 percent, service sector with 30 percent, clubs and associations with 23 percent, direct marketing with 15 percent and electronics and computer with 14 percent.
