American Express, Walmart team up for revamped Bluebird card program

American Express has entered an agreement with US-based multinational corporation Walmart to revamp the Bluebird card program.

Under the agreement, Bluebird members can deposit money through payroll direct deposit, remote cheque capture via the Bluebird mobile application, using cash at Walmart registers or by linking a checking, savings or debit card to their accounts. Members can also set up alerts and controls to manage their accounts and use their Bluebird card at locations that accept American Express cards. Bluebird also allows consumers to make person to person (P2P) payments and control subaccounts from their smartphone devices.

Consumers can sign-up for free on Bluebird.com or buy an account set up kit at a local Walmart store for immediate use. The set up kit includes a starter card, which can be funded with cash. Once funded, the starter card can be used across the US where American Express cards are accepted. Customers must then complete their account set up at bluebird.com in order to access all the features of Bluebird, as well as receive their personalized Bluebird card.

In recent news, American Express has launched an integration with Apple’s Passbook, a mobile wallet that allows iPhone and iPod touch users to store cards.
