Blackboard rolls out platform for contactless campus cards

Monday 8 March 2010 10:50 CET | News

Campus commerce and security services provider Blackboard has released its Blackboard Transact platform. The platform permits students to pay for various products and services or entry buildings with a wave or tap of their smart cards with built-in chips.

Blackboard Transact has been developed for higher education institutions in the United States and supports Near Field Communication (NFC) contactless technology. Blackboard has opted for such a technology via Sony’s FeliCa in order to provide the users of Blackboard Transact with a secure file system and data communications structure.

FeliCa technology enables communication between the software, the card reader and the FeliCa card via mutual authentication and encrypted data transfer.

Featuring a suite of services such as commerce and security management, the Blackboard Transact platform is set to be expanded with the purpose of replacing campus ID cards with mobile phones and devices as the ID.
