Canadian customers welcome more alternatives in the debit marketplace - study

Friday 16 October 2009 09:43 CET | News

Almost 74 percent of Canadian consumers have expressed their interest in a debit card that offers enhanced features, while two out of three respondents consider that they should have access to more options when it comes to direct debit payments in Canada.

These are the findings of a survey conducted by Canadian research company Pollara on behalf of Visa Canada, which also indicates that debit cards are the most frequently used payment cards in Canada.

Visa has already revealed its intentions to roll out debit cards in Canada. As a result of this initiative, Visa Debit cardholders will be able to use their Visa debit cards to shop in Canada, at retail locations worldwide, purchase products and services online, over the phone or by mail. The Canadian finance minister Jim Flaherty is preparing to introduce a voluntary code of conduct to govern Visas and MasterCards entry into Canadas debit card market. The code aims to improve the transparency of the debit card processing industry.
