Cubic receives EMV bank card approval for smart ticketing system

Tuesday 18 October 2011 15:00 CET | News

Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS), a developer of smartcard ticketing systems for public transport in the US, the UK and Australia, has developed the Tri-Reader 3 device which processes contactless EMV bank cards for use in public transit revenue management systems.

The system is designed to allow commuters to use the same payment card for both transit and retail purchases.

Tri-Reader 3 processes all industry standard contactless smart cards, as well as bank-issued contactless EMV cards. The reader has been approved by EMVCo, American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa

The CTS device is set to be able to read multiple card schemes on the same contactless reader, such as Oyster, ITSO and contactless EMV cards in the UK. Also, Tri Reader 3 can support payments made with Near Field Communications (NFC) technology-powered mobile devices.

While Cubic tests its account-based processing technology in the Philadelphia/New Jersey US region, the Tri-Reader 3 is set to be deployed on buses in London, UK.
