Diebold launches ATM contactless card reader

Thursday 10 October 2013 10:56 CET | News

US-based automated teller machine (ATM) provider Diebold has made a contactless card reader available to financial institutions worldwide.

The solution leverages Near Field Communication (NFC) at the ATM, allowing the user interface to read contactless payment cards, mobile devices with NFC support and additional forms of contactless media such as fobs, stickers and tags.

Available as an upgrade on existing Opteva terminals, Diebold’s contactless card reader is set to coexist with both dip and motorised magnetic stripe card readers to allow an alternate method to initiate transactions.

In recent news, Diebold has closed an agreement with Boston-based mobile payments company Paydiant to enable consumers to use their smartphones, instead of their debit or credit cards, to withdraw cash from automated teller machines (ATMs).
