The Euro Alliance of Payment Schemes (EAPS), an alliance of European card schemes, has announced that two of its participants, namely Consorzio Bancomat and Zentraler Kreditausschuss, now enable German and Italian card schemes to connect ATM networks.

As a result, the two EAPS participants allow each other’s cardholders to withdraw cash from ATM networks across Italy (Bancomat) and Germany (Girocard) respectively. Crossborder POS acceptance between the cash withdrawal scheme Bancomat and the Girocard interbank network and debit card service is soon to follow.

“Payment schemes participating in EAPS were responsible for more than 7 billion ATM and POS transactions in 2008. EAPS is aligned to the expectations of the European Commission and the European Central Bank for a European card payment scheme to emerge within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).”, according to EAPS representatives.

The Zentraler Kreditausschuss (ZKA) is the joint committee operated by the central associations of the German banking industry, while Consorzio Bancomat operates both the Bancomat scheme and the debit card payment scheme named PagoBancomat. The Euro Alliance of Payment Schemes aims at creating a pan-European debit card system.
