Monday 3 August 2009 00:18 CET | News

Starting 1 August 2009, Indian financial regulator the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made it compulsory for Indian financial services providers to employ an additional layer of protection in order to secure online card transactions.

Under the new provisions, banks and other credit and debit card issuers must ensure that all cardholders are registered under the Verified by Visa or MasterCard 3D-Secure programs. The deadline for cardholder registration was 1 August, a date which also marks the debut of stricter guideline requiring the cardholder to obtain their 3D-Secure passwords in order to carry out transactions with 3D-Secure merchant sites in India. Cardholders can obtain their passwords by registering online with their issuing banks. Consumers will be prompted to provide their 3D-Secure codes to complete any online purchases carried out via their credit or debit cards.
