Wednesday 26 August 2009 00:38 CET | News

French-based security and smartcard technology provider Oberthur Technologies has been awarded China UnionPay (CUP) certification for its Shenzhen manufacturing centre in China. CUP is only domestic credit card organization in China, also acting as an interbank network and linking the ATMs of some major banks and smaller banks throughout mainland China.

The Oberthur Technologies Shenzhen manufacturing site already provides SIM cards for the global telecom industry, and is now supplying magnetic stripe and EMV cards to banking customers in China and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. EMV is the global electronic transaction standard that outlines interaction between chip (smart) cards and merchant terminals to ensure inter-operability.

Already certified by Visa, MasterCard and Amex, the Oberthur Technologies Shenzhen production unit has applied and received CUP payment scheme standard certification in a bid to increase the scope of its operations.
