Prepaid Visa cardholders hit by USD 23 quadrillion false charges

Friday 17 July 2009 11:51 CET | News

A glitch in Visas debit processing system has caused a number of Visa prepaid cardholders in the US to be charged amounts in excess of USD 23 quadrillion on their individual statements, CNN reports. The 17-digit charges were noticed by cardholders during routine balance inquiries, coupled with overdraft fees.

The same source indicates that when the consumers in question contacted their issuing banks, they were assured that the charges and falsely issued fees would be voided. According to CNN, Visa released a statement in which it attributed the charges to a “temporary programming error at Visa Debit Processing Services ... [which] caused some transactions to be inaccurately posted to a small number of Visa prepaid accounts”. Visa also indicated that the false charges affected “fewer than 13,000 prepaid transactions”.
